Traditionally the concert season for a new year starts in the German town of
Cologne. We also spent a few days in Cologne, watching the fireworks on New
Year's eve from the banks of the river Rhine and attending the traditional New
Year's concert the day after. Once in a while, André invites members of his
orchestra to do a solo performance. In this concert, Tanja Derwahl and Monoe
Konings each performed in a solo appearance. André mentioned that a few
years ago Manoe was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2001 she, André and
the JSO appeared in the José Carera Gala for cancer relief, where she played
without the wig. In our Golden Oldies section we have the clip of this
