A yearly tradition in Maastricht!! André Rieu will host a series of open air concerts in the month of July.

If you spend your holiday in Holland you can combine the concerts with a visit to other places in the Netherlands. If you have a lot of time you could head for the Efteling, the fairytale park where André recorded his Wonderland DVD. We have created a walk through the park, passing along the places used in the DVD. The Efteling is not in the province of Limburg, but in the province of Noord-Brabant. It will take two hours by public transport to arrive there from Maastricht. Please find below the "Wonderland Walk" which might take a full day, so it will be hard to do it in one day-trip from Maastricht.

Since the Maastricht concerts start at 21:00 (9:00PM), you may have time to discover Maastricht and its surroundings. Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in The Netherlands and it is founded by the Romans. Traces of this Roman history are still present today.

Ineke and Ruud have compiled two walks and a bike route.

One walk leads through the historic inner city and the second leads towards and over the

St. Pietersberg (Mount Saint Peter). Both walks include places related to André.

We have also added a bike trip around the St. Pietersberg, visiting the many vineyards of the area. Although you can walk this route (12 KM), we suggest you to rent a bike and peddle around the "mountain". This route is relatively flat (like everything else in Holland), so it does not require extra stamina!

If you find that the current situation has changed, or the description we provided is not clear or you notice any errors or have suggestions, please let us know at ruud.elshout@kpnmail.nl

Would you like to visit the American Military War Cemetry in MARGRATEN??

It is not too far from Maastricht! Go to the Maastricht train station. In front of the train station you’ll find the bus station. Take bus #50 in the direction of Aachen (Germany). Buses depart every 15 minutes: 0.15/0.30/0.45.etc. Buy a bus ticket from the driver for

€ 2,50. Exit the bus after 25 minutes at bus stop Margraten.

The video below will give you an impression of Maastricht and its surroundings.

Would you like to take pictures with André?? You can find his statue on the country estate (open to the public) of CHATEAU (HOTEL) ST. GERLACH in Geulhem/Houthem, near Valkenburg. A stylish baroque garden, a farmhouse herb garden, a standard-tree fruit arboretum and a rose garden. The baroque garden of the castle-hotel displays several statues and pieces of art. You can have nice walks from the estate to the romantic Geul river, which is typical for the Limburg scenery (routes available at the reception desk). It’s a hotel, restaurant, bistro, a church and a treasury. The history of the estate (former convent) dates back to the 12th century. You can see a short video about the life of Saint Gerlach. Take the train from Maastricht train station, platform 6, in the direction of Kerkrade. The train departs every 30 min, e.g. at 0.15, 045, etc. It is a 15 minute ride.

Exit at station  Houthem/St.Gerlach and walk to the estate.

You could also take a taxi from Maastricht.

The address is: Joseph Corneli Allee 1, 6301 KK Valkenburg.

If you like to step on the point where three countries meet, you will need to travel to the DRIELANDENPUNT(Three countries point) in Vaals. Now you can say you have been in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, all on one square meter! Bus # 50 departs from the bus station (in front of the train station of Maastricht) every 15 min. at 0.15, 0.30, 0.45. 0.00, in the direction of Aachen (Germany). After about a 90 minutes bus ride, you exit the bus near Drielandenpunt in Vaals, but another 30 min. walk is required. Here you can also climb the highest “mountain” of the Netherlands: 327 meters high. Doesn’t that sound interesting? On the picture (left): Jim Morgan is in the Netherlands and Ruud is in Germany. Your cell phone will go crazy! On the picture (right): Ruud climbed our one and only “mountain”, called “Vaalserberg”! Ruth Morgan takes a picture.

FOR OUR SOUTH AFRICAN FAN FRIENDS:

We recently discovered a new (since April 2011) South African shop in Maastricht. This store offers quality products and art. Do you remember the video clip about the "Maastricht" winery in the Durbanville Hills near Capetown?? Click here to see that video. You can find the Maastricht shop, named: "Baie Goed" (Very Good) in the Rechtstraat 53, in the  Wyck quarter (between the old Servaas Bridge and the Train Station). Red (Shiraz) or white (Sauvignon blanc) wines are among the items offered to their customers. The label on the bottles read: "ANN0 1702. The mystery behind the oak trees planted to form a giant cross on the Maastricht wine estate, by a Dutch monk in the 1700's, may never be unearthed. Although there is no mystery today about the quality of the wines made in "Maastricht" SA".
